New Research Shows How Rheumatoid Arthritis Spreads

A recent study published in Natural Medicine suggests that cells surrounding joints that are afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis may travel through the bloodstream causing joint soreness in other joints. This is the reason that many people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis tend to notice that over time the disease spreads to other areas of their body if left untreated.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that causes inflammation and joint pain, and up until now, there was no scientific evidence as to why the disease spread throughout the human body so efficiently. The study concluded that cells called synovial fibroblasts may be the reason why rheumatoid arthritis can spread to different joints if untreated.

Synovial fibroblasts travel through blood vessels and cause damage to cartilage tissue and the lining of joints which in turn causes pain and inflammation in the afflicted. In order to prevent this from happening, it is important to treat rheumatoid arthritis as soon as it is diagnosed.

Most treatment options for rheumatoid arthritis consist of drug therapy. The most common types of drugs used to treat this type of arthritis include disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) or the newer TNF blockers that block the disease from progressing. A recent study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh concluded that was no significant difference to the effectiveness between DMARDs and the more expensive TNF medications, so in this case, more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean more effective.

An effective natural treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is fish oil. Taken as a supplement or when consumed in DHA-rich foods, fish oil helps to reduce inflammation in your joints. While this treatment may help those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, it’s not a comprehensive treatment option for the disease. Most doctors would recommend using fish oil as a supplemental treatment for aiding inflammation caused by the disease and taking an approved DMARD or TNF medication to further control the pain as well as the spread of disease.
